Northstar Rising : Steampunk Festival – 13th, 14th & 15th July 2018

Northstar Rising Steampunk Festival

Northstar Rising

Evancliffe Leathercraft will have a stall at Northstar Rising, a Steampunk Festival being held near Durham over the weekend of Friday 13th to Sunday 15th July 2018.

What is Northstar Rising?

Beyond a first class Steampunk event featuring music from Mr B, Victor and The Bully. Victor Sierra, Kiss Like Ether, feline and Strange, and more, Northstar Rising is a new concept: A build-your-own steampunk festival…want to chill out with great music? you can do that…want to shop at amazing steampunk markets? you can do that…want to BE the character you have created? you can do that too.

Based at the amazing Moor House Adventure Centre near the historic city of Durham, we not only have ample camping in a drained, managed, purpose built campsite, but also a tent village for those who want an easier weekend, and a variety of dorm rooms for those who’d prefer a roof over their head. 19 acres of mixed woodland and fields to play on, camping for up to 1000, and only 10 minutes from Durham city. Being based at the site gives Northstar Rising visitors access to a vast array of activities that you won’t commonly find at other events – the weekend will feature Pirate, Explorer, Post Apocalypse, and Gentlemanly/Ladylike combat themed activities supervised by professional instructors and will include rifle, pistol and crossbow shooting, archery, high ropes/rigging challenges, climbing, adventurer skills, Victorian martial arts, pirate combat and much more – and completion of the courses will earn you a medal to recognise your new skills!. We’ll also be offering trips off site – ghost walks, gin crawls, tours of historic sites, visits to Locomotion rail museum, and more!

What’s on Site at Northstar Rising?

On site, as well as accommodation and activities, there will be 2 stages (acoustic and electric), 2 market areas, a steampunk cafe, a camping supply shop, and a large bonfire area! You can do as much or as little as you like. Steampunk is all about building things – why not build your festival? The organisers will be announcing performers, detailing the available activities, looking for the best traders for the markets and taking feedback from potential visitors so that they can add the activities that YOU want – want to go caving or canoeing? They can probably sort that – this is going to be the event that you want it to be!

More information from Impossible Gears can be found on their website’s dedicated  Northstar Rising Page and on the event’s facebook page.

Musketeer Etching showing the Bandolier.
Musketeer Etching showing the Bandolier.

A Bandolier is a strap which goes over your shoulder and hangs diagonally across your body. The Musketeer’s Bandolier includes a shot bag and has the “Apostles” attached to it to hold gunpowder.

Through our popular hands-on Stitch-an-Inch activity visitors can also learn how we hand stitch leather to create handcrafted leather items such as the bandolier, belts, bags and much more.

A Winter Skirmish: The Battle of Yarm, 1643

An exhibition commemorating the 375th anniversary of an encounter between Royalists and Parliamentarians during the English Civil War of the 17th Century.

Fought on 1 February 1643, the Battle of Yarm saw a defending force of Parliamentarians defeated by the attacking Royalists, who captured the vitally-important Yarm Bridge. Then, as now, the bridge was one of the main crossings over the River Tees.

Discover the story of this battle and the wider histories of the English Civil War in this fascinating, Heritage Lottery Fund-supported exhibition.

Free entry with museum admission. Last admission 3.30pm.

This  genuine Castle, once owned by the Neville Earls of Westmorland, has a lot of history. It was HQ for the Durham Light Infantry before falling into neglect and being rescued by the current owners, who are doing their best to restore and preserve it.

Following the first event of it’s kind in the North East in 2015 The North East Re-Enactment & LARP Market is now an annual event in it’s third yearwith traders coming from far afield such as Poland purveying a large and varied selection of re-enacting & LARP merchandise  as well as traders  like ourselves who are very close to home for a change!

The location in the North East is excellent, being easy reach of the A1(M), and close to Durham, Sunderland, Middlesborough, Darlington, Gateshead, Newcastle and not that far from Edinburgh.
